Dad Secretly Cancels Son’s Job Applications So He Won’t Get a Job

A Reddit user shares the story of her son moving back home after college graduation. The son applied for jobs but has yet to hear back from them. The original poster (OP) discovered her husband had been canceling their son’s job applications so he would stay home and take care of the family.

He’s Been Looking For A Job For Over A Year

After graduating college, OP’s son returned home, and OP’s husband gladly welcomed their son back. OP has a younger son who is disabled, so the husband saw a lot of benefits with extra help.

After some time, OP’s eldest son was tired of staying home and said he wanted to get a job to make money. So the dad offered to double his son’s allowance to convince him to stay. But that wasn’t enough for the son to stay. So, their son began looking for a job.

For over a year, the son has been waiting to hear from the companies he applied to. But he didn’t hear back from any of them, which OP and her son thought was strange. 

Later, OP learned that her husband was behind why her son was not hearing back from any of the companies. After each time their son applied for a job, the dad would pretend to be his son, email the company, and can his son’s application.

OP’s husband felt that if their older son got a job, that would affect his caring for his younger brother. OP suggested hiring outside help, but her husband refused and said, “his son is his problem and nobody else’s.” 

In response, OP rented an apartment for her son and was okay with paying for it until her son found a job. 

Her husband was furious and accused OP of separating her boys, ultimately calling her selfish and self-centered.

What’s The Long-Term Goal?

Reddit users chime in. And one user shared that if the son didn’t get support from at least one of the parents, he would grow to resent them and end contact with both parents.

Another Reddit user asked what the father’s long-term goal was for his oldest son: Would he hope the government would support him? Or should the son hope that a company would magically give him a high-paying job with great insurance?

Regarding applying for a job in the future, the same user pointed out that an adult with no job history will have a slim chance of getting hired. 

Was OP wrong for allowing her son to leave home and get him an apartment? Did the father have good intentions, or was he the one being selfish? Is it the older’s son responsibility to take care of his younger brother? Can the older son easily find a job without experience over time?
