A Reddit user shares the story of her husband, who lost his job a few years ago. However, with his newfound free time, he doesn’t take advantage of the opportunity to help clean the house or cook dinner.
She Became The Breadwinner
The original poster (OP)’s husband lost his job due to the pandemic and hasn’t found a job he’d be willing to do. After OP’s husband lost his job, they both agreed that it would be wise for OP to work for extra years and put more money towards her pension. So, now, OP is the only one working in their household.
When OP’s husband used to work, he made strides to save for their retirement by working hard and setting aside money. Also, all their kids have moved out, which, all the more, reduces the stress on their finances.

Unfortunately, OP’s husband doesn’t take advantage of his free time by helping with chores like cooking meals or cleaning. OP said when she used to be a stay-at-home mom, she could do all the cleaning and cooking. So, his inaction is driving her crazy.
OP suggested to her husband that they hire someone to help with housework. But she also mentioned that the money to hire someone would come from their date night budget.
He Called Her “Controlling”
OP’s husband was upset when he the plans to hire help with housework. Then, he went one step further, accusing OP of being “controlling” because she was the new breadwinner of the company.
And although he reached out to kids for support. His children called him out for his laziness, and he needed to help more at home.
The Masses Share Their Thoughts
Reddit users say OP’s husband needs to pull his weight around the house or find a job to pay someone to help with the housework. Also, they add OP should never be doing all the housework and that OP’s husband should be helping out.
Other Reddit users are saying OP is not controlling. Instead, they say OP is realistic, and that money has to come from somewhere, especially on their limited budget.
Another user says they are in a similar situation. Their husband is “retired” and doesn’t do any household work. So instead, all the user’s husband does is watch TV or Youtube.
Is OP controlling her husband now that she is the breadwinner in the household? Is it OP wrong to hire help with housework to help with the chores? Are they even ready for retirement, considering today’s marketplace?
