Is Her Dad’s Advice to Use Mom for Money Justified?
A Reddit user shares the story of his ex-wife wanting a closer relationship with their daughter and him telling his daughter that she can use the time to get whatever she wants from her mother.
Parental Obligation
The original poster (OP) explains when he was married to his ex-wife, she acted like she wanted children, but when their daughter was born, she was never caring toward her. She blamed their daughter for their loss of independence. A year after their daughter was born, OP and his wife got divorced. OP’s ex-wife gave him everything. She moved away and started her own business, worked on her physical fitness, and got laser surgery.
OP’s ex-wife moved to LA and travels frequently. She became a relatively famous influencer. OP acknowledged that whenever her financial situation changed, she would return and have her child support agreement changed so that their daughter would receive more money.
Every time she would come back to visit, she would spend time with their daughter. Even though OP and his wife don’t need child support anymore, his ex-wife continues to pay.

Making An Effort
Around three years ago, OP said that his ex-wife started making more of an effort with their daughter. She would come over more frequently and would call every night. OP acknowledges that it is a step in the right direction. OP found out that his ex-wife’s grandfather is ill and would likely pass within the month.
OP’s ex-wife would be going to India for the funeral and wanted to take their daughter with her. OP and his wife agreed, but their daughter wasn’t very keen on the idea. OP pointed out that her mom will take her to nice places and she’ll get to see cool things. He also said that at the very least, she can get “whatever she wants” out of her mom for the two weeks.
OP’s wife overheard his comment and scolded him for telling his daughter that she could “use her mom for cash.”
Was OP’s suggestion for their daughter okay? Should she have to go on the trip with her mother? How would you have reacted in this situation?
