Woman Negotiates Care For Sister In Exchange For This
A Reddit user says her parents expect her to care for her sister if anything happens to them. Her sister has some disabilities and receives some government, but not complete.
The original poster (OP) says she has two older brothers married with established careers. OP feels they are better suited financially to care for their younger sister.
OP gave it some thought and believed she came up with fair suggestions:
- Make all the siblings equal guardians so they can split responsibilities and duties
- Have the parents put their entire estate in a trust for their daughter, that will oversee her care
- Leave all the estate to OP, assign OP as the sole guardian, and take full responsibility.
OP’s parents’ estate only comprised their house and life insurance policies. And yet, her parents accused her of being greedy and trying to “shrink her responsibility.”

So, OP made another suggestion, but her parents hated it. She suggested that they cut her out of the will and include guardianship of her sister.
Her brothers called her, calling her greedy for trying to keep them from receiving any part of the estate. OP asked them if they wanted 100% responsibility for their sister in return for the entire estate while she signed away everything.
None of them took her up on her offer.
The Community Weights In
Many Reddit users praise OP for being rational and not letting her family’s guilt get in her way. Her entire family wants OP to put her life on hold while she takes care of her sister without receiving any “benefit.”
Other Reddit users are asking where the brothers are. They say the brothers want a third of their parent’s estate, but they want zero responsibility over their sister. That’s not fair.
Is OP wrong for asking for the entire estate if she is going to be the sole guardian of his sister? Why don’t the brothers want to help if they expect to receive a portion of the estate? Why do the parents hope she cares for her sister versus the two older siblings?
