He Received a $1 Million Inheritance But Still Too Cheap To Pay Bills
A Reddit user shares her boyfriend has been unemployed numerous times within ten years. So, she agreed to pay most of the bills and groceries. However, after her boyfriend received a million-dollar inheritance, he still refuses to pay his share of the bills.
Her Boyfriend Had Money Issues
The original poster (OP)’s boyfriend struggled to keep a job consistently. So, OP and her boyfriend agreed he would only need to contribute 1/3 of his take-home pay toward rent and utilities. He did try to help with expenses, such as buying groceries, but OP still paid for most things.
She Wanted Him To Pay An Equal Share
Since OP’s boyfriend inherited a large sum of money, she wanted him to start paying his equal share for rent and utilities. However, when she asked him to pay his equal share, he only offered to increase his contribution slightly, not 50/50.
OP says her boyfriend doesn’t think he doesn’t need to do more to help with the household expenses. However, he’s already made small purchases with his inheritance, such as speakers and collectible snowboards.

Many Reddit members are saying OP is doing more than subsidizing his lifestyle. Instead, they are calling him a “freeloading cheapskate.” They recommend OP kick him out. And then he’ll start paying “his own way” real quick!
Other Reddit users ask why OP allows herself to be with her boyfriend. They pointed out that OP’s boyfriend has been unemployed numerous times and that she has chosen to be with someone that’s “lazy and uninspired.”
Is OP subsidizing her boyfriend’s lifestyle? Is OP’s boyfriend taking advantage of her kindness and being a “freeloader?” Is there anything OP can do to convince her boyfriend to start paying his fair share?
